A panel PC is an industrial computer with a built-in touchscreen, mounted in a machine, a control cabinet door, a console or a vehicle. It runs Windows, Linux or Android and handles HMI and SCADA software, MES terminals, kiosks and vision displays in one unit. SCN supplies panel PCs from Winmate, IEI and Axiomtek, with Intel Celeron, Core and Core Ultra or Arm processors.

The range is sorted by size: 10 inch and smaller, 12 to 17 inch and 18 inches or larger, up to 23.8 inches. It covers fanless models with IP65 fronts or fully sealed housings, stainless IP69K panel PCs for food and pharma, models with a PCIe x16 slot, Arm panel PCs with an NPU and an EN 50155 railway model. For specific environments there are medical panel PCs, marine panel PCs, defence panel PCs and vehicle panel PCs. All industrial PCs are under Industrial Computers.

What is a panel PC?

A panel PC is a complete industrial computer built into the back of a touchscreen, so display, processor, storage and I/O sit in one flat unit mounted in a cabinet door or machine. It runs standard Windows or Linux software, which suits it for HMI and SCADA, MES terminals and kiosks. Many models, such as the IEI PPC2 series, are fanless and have IP65 fronts.

Resistive or capacitive touch – which is best for a panel PC?

Choose projected capacitive touch, PCAP, for a smartphone-like feel with multi-touch, gestures and a hard glass surface. Choose resistive touch when operators wear thick gloves, use a stylus or the screen gets wet, because it reacts to pressure rather than to the finger's conductivity. Axiomtek offers both, for example the resistive GOT317B and the PCAP GOT321B.

Which panel PC is suitable for food production and washdown?

For washdown areas choose a fully sealed stainless steel panel PC rated IP69K, which withstands high-pressure, high-temperature cleaning. Examples are the Axiomtek GOT515, GOT521 and GOT818A and the IEI SHIELD-185-U and SHIELD-215-U, several of them with M12 connectors instead of open ports. A panel PC with only an IP65 front is meant for a cabinet door where the rear stays dry.

How is a panel PC mounted?

Most panel PCs are panel mounted: they are fitted into a cut-out in a cabinet door or console and clamped from behind, so the front gasket seals against the panel. Many also have VESA holes for an arm, a stand or a wall bracket. Check the cut-out dimensions and mounting depth in the datasheet before the door is machined.
