Single Board Computer

Single board computers are complete computers on one circuit board, built into machines, instruments and rugged systems. SCN supplies single board computers from Diamond Systems, Aitech and IEI, including embedded boards in compact form factors, PC/104-Express modules with serial and I/O interfaces, COM Express carrier boards, M-Module carrier boards, military circuit board computers and VME enclosures. They are used in industrial automation, vehicles, defence and aerospace, and measurement systems. Our engineers help you choose the right form factor, processor, interfaces and temperature range for your application.

Single board computers – industrial SBCs, CPU modules and backplanes for embedded systems

A single board computer (SBC) has the processor, memory, storage interfaces and I/O on one circuit board. It is the choice when the computer is built into your own product or enclosure – a machine, an instrument, a vehicle or a defence system – instead of buying a finished PC. Industrial SBCs are designed for long availability, extended temperature ranges and many years of continuous operation. SCN supplies boards from IEI, Axiomtek, Diamond Systems, Aitech, Congatec, AAEON, Duagon and b-plus.

Choose by form factor: Pico-ITX / DIMM and 3.5-inch boards for compact devices, EPIC boards, rugged stackable PC/104 family boards and ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ATX motherboards. Computer-on-modules are found under COM Express / COM-HPC and Qseven. For systems with plug-in CPU cards, see PICMG full size, PICMG half size, CompactPCI, VME and VPX and 3U/6U. There are also MIL, aero and space SBCs and I/O expansion modules and accessories. Prefer a finished system? See box PCs and all industrial computers.

How to choose: start with the space available and the form factor, then the processor platform (Intel Atom, Celeron, Core or Arm), memory and the interfaces you need: Ethernet, serial ports, USB, display outputs, PCIe and M.2 expansion. Check the operating temperature and how long the board must be available for your product.

Frequently asked questions

What is a single board computer?

A single board computer is a complete computer built on one circuit board, with processor, memory, storage and I/O interfaces. Industrial SBCs follow standard form factors such as 3.5-inch, Pico-ITX, EPIC and PC/104, so they fit into enclosures, instruments and machines, and they are built for extended temperatures and long availability.

Should I choose a ready SBC or a COM Express module?

A ready SBC is fastest when a standard form factor and its connectors suit your design. A computer-on-module such as COM Express, COM-HPC or Qseven fits on your own carrier board, so the connectors and size follow your product, and the processor can be upgraded later by changing only the module.

Which SBC form factor fits my device?

Pico-ITX (100 × 72 mm) suits very compact devices, 3.5-inch (146 × 102 mm) is the common choice for embedded PCs and panel PCs, EPIC and PC/104 suit rugged, stackable systems and Mini-ITX or ATX boards suit systems with expansion cards. PICMG, VME and VPX are used in rack systems with backplanes.

Intel x86 or Arm – which platform is right?

Choose Intel x86 when the application runs Windows or existing PC software, or needs high computing and graphics performance. Arm boards, such as those with Rockchip processors, typically run Linux or Android with very low power consumption and suit compact, passively cooled devices. Many industrial ranges offer both on the same form factor.
