Industrial box PCs – fanless embedded computers for cabinets, machines and vehicles

A box PC is a complete industrial computer in a closed, compact enclosure. It is mounted on a DIN rail, a wall or a rack and runs machine control, data collection, gateways, video analytics or AI close to the process – without a built-in screen. Most models are fanless with no moving parts, many are rated for operation down to −40 °C and accept wide-range DC power. SCN supplies box PCs from Axiomtek, IEI, Moxa, Aitech, Diamond Systems, AAEON and Winmate.

The range is grouped by use. Low performance, moderate performance and high performance are graded by processor. AI-at-the-edge computers with NVIDIA Jetson run AI models next to the cameras. There are also in-vehicle box PCs for trains, buses and work machines, marine box PCs, medical PCs and MIL and aircraft rugged systems. Need a built-in touch screen? Choose a panel PC.

How to choose: start with the processor performance and memory the application needs. Then list the interfaces: Ethernet ports (PoE for cameras), serial COM ports, USB, digital I/O, CAN and expansion slots for 4G/5G, Wi-Fi or fieldbus cards. Finally check mounting, operating temperature, power input and the certifications your environment requires. SCN's engineers help you configure the right system, including memory and storage.

Frequently asked questions

How does a fanless box PC stay cool?

The enclosure itself is the heatsink. Heat from the processor is led through heat pipes or thermal pads to the finned aluminium housing and released to the surrounding air. That is why fanless PCs use energy-efficient processors and need free air around the fins – and why they keep running in dust and dirt where a fan would clog.

Intel Atom, Intel Core or NVIDIA Jetson – which processor do I need?

Intel Atom and Celeron are enough for gateways, data logging, protocol conversion and simple HMIs. Intel Core and Xeon handle machine vision, SCADA servers, several screens and virtual machines. NVIDIA Jetson is the choice when AI models analyse camera streams – see AI-at-the-edge computing.

Which certifications are needed in trains, vehicles and ships?

Rail vehicles require EN 50155, which covers temperature and power supply, together with EN 61373 for shock and vibration. Road vehicles need E-mark (UN ECE R10) for electromagnetic compatibility. On ships, IEC 60945 and class approvals such as DNV apply. Each product's datasheet lists its certifications.

How long is an industrial box PC available?

Much longer than an office PC. Industrial box PCs are built on embedded processor platforms with long availability, manufacturers typically keep a model in production for five years or more and announce end-of-life in advance. That makes it possible to standardise on one model for a whole machine series.
