Industrial network products – switches, routers, gateways and wireless for automation, rail and energy

Industrial network products connect PLCs, sensors, drives, cameras and computers to each other and to the rest of the company, securely and around the clock. They are built for control cabinets and vehicles: DIN rail mounting, 12–48 V DC power, wide temperature ranges and approvals for rail, substations and hazardous areas. SCN supplies products from Moxa, HMS Networks (Ixxat and Netbiter), Indu-Sol, INSYS icom, ORing, Atop and Protempis.

The range covers Ethernet switches, secure routers and VPN routers including 4G and 5G, wireless access points and clients, Ethernet media converters, industrial connectivity such as serial device servers and USB-to-serial converters, bridges and gateways between Modbus, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS and CANopen, CAN interfaces, CAN repeaters, fieldbus diagnostics, GPS and timing, IP cameras and video servers and accessories. PLCs, HMIs and SCADA are under Control Systems.

How to choose: start with what must be connected and which protocols the devices speak. Then decide distances and media (copper, fiber, wireless or cellular), the need for redundancy and remote access, and finally the environment and approvals such as EN 50155, IEC 61850-3 or ATEX.

Frequently asked questions

What is OT security?

OT security is the protection of the networks and systems that control physical processes – PLCs, HMIs, SCADA and drives – against cyberattacks and mistakes. In practice the network is divided into zones according to IEC 62443, traffic between them is filtered by industrial firewalls or OT security gateways such as the Moxa iNA series, remote access runs over encrypted VPN and events are logged.

What is Modbus?

Modbus is an open, simple industrial protocol in which a master reads and writes registers in slave devices such as meters, drives and PLCs. Modbus RTU runs over serial RS-485 or RS-232, while Modbus TCP runs over Ethernet. A gateway such as the Moxa MGate MB3180 converts between the two, and other MGate models translate Modbus to PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or DNP3.

What is CAN bus?

CAN bus is a robust two-wire bus where all nodes share the same line and messages are prioritised by their identifier, which is why it is common in vehicles, mobile machines and automation. Classic CAN runs at up to 1 Mbit/s, while CAN FD adds higher speed and up to 64 bytes per message. A PC connects through a USB-to-CAN interface such as the Ixxat USB-to-CAN V2.

How do I make an industrial network reliable?

Build in redundancy and segment the network. Connect switches in a ring with a fast protocol such as Moxa Turbo Ring, which recovers in under 20 ms, or use PRP/HSR to IEC 62439-3 for redundancy without any interruption. Use fiber for long runs and between buildings, power devices from two DC supplies and monitor the network with SNMP or diagnostic switches such as Indu-Sol PROmesh.
