PLC systems

PLC systems control machines and processes with a programmable controller and connected I/O modules. SCN supplies PLC systems mainly from Yaskawa, with the 300S+, Micro PLC and SLIO ranges, including CPUs, digital and analog I/O modules, communication processors and power supplies. The range also covers Automotion I/O from Moxa and software for PLC programming and HMIs. They are used in machine building and industrial automation. Our engineers help you choose the right CPU, I/O modules and communication interfaces for your application.

PLC systems – programmable controllers and I/O for machine and process automation

A PLC (programmable logic controller) reads signals from sensors and switches, runs the control program in a fixed cycle and switches motors, valves and indicators. A PLC system consists of a CPU, digital and analog I/O modules, communication modules and a power supply, programmed with IEC 61131-3 tools. SCN supplies PLC systems from Yaskawa, remote I/O and controllers from Moxa and Weintek, and software for programming, HMI and SCADA.

The 300S+ range is a modular system with CPUs and SM I/O modules for larger machines. The Micro PLC M13 is a compact controller with 16 DI, 12 DO, 2 AI and 2 PWM outputs that can be expanded with I/O modules. SLIO is a slim I/O system with interface modules for PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, PROFIBUS DP and MECHATROLINK, plus IO-Link master, safety I/O and energy measurement. Under Automotion I/O you find Moxa ioLogik remote I/O, ioPAC controllers for rail (EN 50155) and the Weintek cMT-CTRL01 CODESYS controller. Software covers Speed 7 Studio, Movicon and EasyBuilder Pro. All control products are under Control Systems.

How to choose: count the I/O points and signal types, pick the fieldbus your drives and sensors use, and decide whether the I/O sits in the cabinet or out in the machine as remote I/O.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PLC?

A PLC is an industrial computer built to control machines and processes reliably around the clock. It reads its inputs, executes the program in a cycle of a few milliseconds and updates its outputs. Unlike an office PC it is DIN-rail mounted, runs on 24 V DC, tolerates electrical noise and is extended module by module as the machine grows.

How is a PLC programmed?

A PLC is programmed from a PC with an engineering tool in the IEC 61131-3 languages: ladder diagram, function block diagram, structured text, instruction list and sequential function chart. Yaskawa PLCs are programmed with Speed 7 Studio in Lite, Basic or Pro, the Weintek cMT-CTRL01 runs CODESYS, and the Moxa ioPAC 6500 also supports IEC 61131-3.

Micro PLC, modular PLC or remote I/O – which do I need?

Choose a micro PLC such as the M13 for small machines with a few dozen I/O points, and a modular PLC such as the 300S+ when you need many I/O, fast analog signals or several networks. Choose remote I/O when signals are spread out or a controller already exists: SLIO and Moxa ioLogik modules sit close to the sensors and cut cabling.

How do I connect I/O to PROFINET, EtherCAT or Modbus?

Use an interface module for the network your controller already runs. SLIO has bus couplers for PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, PROFIBUS DP and MECHATROLINK, each for up to 64 I/O modules. Moxa ioLogik E1200 speaks Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP, while the Moxa 4510 and 4530 add MQTT or OPC UA for IIoT.
