A rugged tablet or industrial PDA is a mobile computer built to survive drops, dust, water, vibration and extreme temperatures where a consumer device fails. They are used for maintenance and inspection, warehouse and logistics, field service, healthcare, defence and on forklifts. SCN supplies rugged tablets, handhelds, laptops and vehicle computers from Winmate, AAEON, Newland AIDC and Onyx Healthcare.

Rugged tablets run from 7 to 13.3 inches with Windows, Linux or Android, IP54 to IP65, MIL-STD-810G/H tested and with screens up to 850 nits; the range includes ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 models, defence tablets, ground control stations and medical tablets. Handheld computers and PDA include Newland Android terminals up to IP67 with 2D scanners and 5G, and Winmate handhelds. Rugged laptops are 13.3 and 14 inch models, most of them fanless and some 2-in-1, and vehicle mount computers from 7 to 14 inches typically run on 9–36 V DC for forklifts and vehicles. All industrial PCs are under Industrial Computers.

What is a rugged tablet?

A rugged tablet is a tablet built to keep working after drops, rain, dust, vibration and temperatures where a consumer tablet fails. Typical specifications are an IP65 enclosure, MIL-STD-810G or 810H testing, a drop height of around 1.2 m, a sunlight-readable screen of 700 nits or more, and an operating range of around -20 to 60 °C. The AAEON RTC-1010, for example, is IP65 and drop-tested from 122 cm.

Why choose a rugged tablet over a consumer tablet?

A rugged tablet costs more up front but usually costs less over its life because it breaks far less often in daily field use. It also offers what consumer tablets lack: hot-swappable batteries, glove and rain touch, serial ports such as RS-232, barcode and RFID readers, vehicle docks, and models that typically stay available for several years, so a fleet can be kept uniform.

Windows or Android – which rugged tablet do I need?

Choose Windows when the tablet must run existing PC software, ERP clients or engineering tools, and Android when it runs mobile apps, scanning and simple forms with long battery life. Windows models such as the Winmate M101TG use Intel Core processors, while Android models such as the AAEON RTC-710RK or Winmate M900MGN use ARM processors and are often lighter.

What do IP65 and MIL-STD-810H mean for a tablet?

IP65 means the tablet is dust-tight and protected against water jets, while IP67 also survives temporary immersion. MIL-STD-810H is a US military test standard for drops, vibration, shock, temperature and humidity; a tablet tested to it, like the AAEON RTC-1020, has passed a set of these tests. For explosive atmospheres, ATEX or IECEx certification such as Zone 2 is required in addition.
