Hour meters

Hour meters, or hour counters, record how long a machine or piece of equipment has been running and give you a reliable basis for service intervals and warranty records. SCN supplies the Tele Haase TBW and TBG hour meters for DIN rail in control cabinets, for 24–230 V AC or 12–48 V DC, and the rugged Petercem CM5200 elapsed time indicators for aerospace, defence and other severe environments. Our engineers help you choose the right supply voltage, mounting and display range for your application.

Hour meters – logging running hours on machines, vehicles and in harsh environments

An hour meter, also called an hour counter or hours run meter, records how long a machine or piece of equipment has been running. It counts time whenever voltage is applied, giving a reliable basis for service intervals and warranty records on pumps, compressors, generators and production machines. Non-resettable models keep the total for the life of the equipment.

SCN supplies two types. The Tele Haase TBW / TBG hour meters are 17.5 mm DIN-rail modules for control cabinets: they count up to 99,999 hours with a resolution of 0.01 h, the TBW for 24–230 V AC and the TBG for 12–48 V DC, and they draw only 0.15 W. For aircraft, military vehicles and other severe environments, the Petercem CM5200 is an analogue elapsed time indicator rated for -55 °C to +125 °C, 100 G shock and 10–34 V DC, in several mounting variants; see Elapsed time indicators Aero & Defence. To control or supervise the same machines, see timing relays and monitoring relays, or browse all components.

How to choose: start with the supply voltage: AC from the mains (TBW) or DC from a battery or 24 V control circuit (TBG or CM5200). Then decide on mounting – DIN rail in a cabinet, or panel, partition or lug mounting in a vehicle or instrument panel. Check temperature, shock and vibration, and finally display range and resolution.

Frequently asked questions

How does an hour meter work?

An hour meter counts time only while voltage is present at its terminals. It is typically connected in parallel with the load, or to a circuit that is live only while the machine runs, so the reading equals actual running time. The TBW / TBG has a reading resolution of 0.01 h, while the CM5200 is an analogue elapsed time indicator with no zero return.

How do I wire an hour meter to a generator or engine?

Connect the hour meter to a signal that is live only while the engine runs, such as the ignition, an auxiliary contact on the motor contactor or the generator output. On a 12 or 24 V DC system the TBG works directly; on a 230 V AC output, use a TBW. Never connect it to a permanent supply, or it will count standstill time too.

What do 0.01 h resolution and a 999.9 h range mean?

Resolution is the smallest step the meter shows: 0.01 h is 36 seconds, so the TBW / TBG logs even short runs precisely up to 99,999 hours, more than eleven years of continuous operation. The CM5200 reads in tenths of an hour, 0.1 h or six minutes, up to 999.9 h, which suits flight hours or mission time on equipment that is serviced frequently.

Which hour meter withstands extreme temperatures and shock?

The Petercem CM5200 is built for exactly that: it works from -55 °C to +125 °C, withstands 100 G shock and 10 G vibration, is waterproof and weighs only 13–17 g. Choose the CM5200 for front mounting, the CM5205 for a Ø 19.5 mm partition cut-out, or the CM5204 and CM5207 lug versions. The TBW / TBG is rated for -15 °C to 50 °C.
