This guide explains what sets the most common industrial protocols apart, where they are used and when you need a gateway to make them talk to each other.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g-short\"><b class=\"t\">Short answer<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>PROFINET<\/b> \u2013 the Siemens world and the most common choice in Europe. Real-time Ethernet for I\/O and drives.<\/li>\n<li><b>EtherNet\/IP<\/b> \u2013 Rockwell (Allen-Bradley) and Omron. Dominant in North America.<\/li>\n<li><b>Modbus TCP\/RTU<\/b> \u2013 simple and open. Found in almost everything from energy meters to drives.<\/li>\n<li><b>EtherCAT and CAN<\/b> \u2013 EtherCAT for fast motion control, CANopen and J1939 in machines and vehicles.<\/li>\n<li><b>OPC UA<\/b> \u2013 for data going up to SCADA, MES and the cloud, not for fast I\/O.<\/li>\n<li>When two devices speak different protocols you need a <b>gateway<\/b>. A shared cable is not enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Why are there so many protocols?<\/h2>\n<p>From the 1980s, fieldbuses replaced the thick cable bundles between PLCs and sensors. Each major manufacturer pushed its own standard: Siemens backed PROFIBUS, Allen-Bradley backed DeviceNet and Bosch developed CAN for cars. With Ethernet came PROFINET, in practice the successor to PROFIBUS, and EtherNet\/IP, which uses the same application layer (CIP) as DeviceNet.<\/p>\n<p>The cables may look identical, but the devices speak different languages. Usually the PLC decides: if the customer chooses Siemens it will be PROFINET, if they choose Rockwell it will be EtherNet\/IP. Gradually replaced by PROFINET.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"n\">OPC UA<\/td>\n<td>Ethernet<\/td>\n<td>Data to SCADA, MES and the cloud, with built-in security.<\/td>\n<td>Vendor-independent, IEC 62541.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"n\">IO-Link<\/td>\n<td>Three-wire cable<\/td>\n<td>Sensors and actuators with parameter setting and diagnostics.<\/td>\n<td>All major sensor manufacturers, IEC 61131-9.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>PROFINET devices are identified by a device name and described in a GSDML file, EtherNet\/IP devices in an EDS file. Modbus has no such description, so you need the manufacturer\u2019s register map. EtherCAT processes frames on the fly in every slave and therefore needs dedicated hardware in the devices. IO-Link is not a network but a point-to-point connection of up to 20 metres between the sensor and an IO-Link master, which in turn sits on the fieldbus.<\/p>\n<h2>Which protocol is used where?<\/h2>\n<p>The choice depends on the industry, the region and the equipment already installed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Factories and machine builders<\/b> \u2013 PROFINET or EtherNet\/IP depending on the customer\u2019s PLC. A machine sold in both Europe and the US often needs both. IO-Link is increasingly used for sensors.<\/li>\n<li><b>Vehicles and mobile machinery<\/b> \u2013 CAN dominates. J1939 in trucks, tractors and construction machines, CANopen in lifts, forklifts and AGVs.<\/li>\n<li><b>Energy and power grids<\/b> \u2013 Modbus in energy meters, inverters and battery storage. Substations use IEC 61850 and IEC 60870-5-104, which often have to be translated to Modbus or DNP3.<\/li>\n<li><b>Water, wastewater and buildings<\/b> \u2013 Modbus RTU and TCP towards SCADA. OPC UA and MQTT when data has to go on to higher-level systems.<\/li>\n<li><b>Railways<\/b> \u2013 dedicated train protocols such as MVB, WTB and TRDP from the IEC 61375 series, with gateways to Ethernet, serial and CAN.<\/li>\n<li><b>Medical technology and laboratories<\/b> \u2013 CANopen and serial interfaces inside instruments and equipment.<\/li>\n<li><b>Semiconductors and electronics<\/b> \u2013 SECS\/GEM between production equipment and the factory host system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When do you need a protocol gateway?<\/h2>\n<p>You need one when, for example, a Modbus meter has to be read by a Siemens PLC. The gateway is usually master or client on one side and slave or device on the other. There, the drives and the PLC should speak the same protocol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Common mistakes<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"g-pit\">\n<li><b>Same connector does not mean same protocol.<\/b> PROFINET and EtherNet\/IP devices can share cables and switches, but they do not exchange any data with each other.<\/li>\n<li><b>No register map.<\/b> Modbus only sends 16-bit registers. Without the manufacturer\u2019s register map you cannot tell temperature from status, or which word of a 32-bit value comes first.<\/li>\n<li><b>Multicast floods the network.<\/b> EtherNet\/IP often sends I\/O data as multicast. Without IGMP snooping in the switches, the traffic goes out on every port and can overload simple devices.<\/li>\n<li><b>Data area too small.<\/b> How many bytes the gateway handles in each direction, and how fast it updates, limits how many devices you can connect.<\/li>\n<li><b>Wrong protocol for the job.<\/b> OPC UA is excellent for sending data upwards, but it does not replace a real-time protocol for I\/O and drives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Gateways and interfaces from SCN<\/h2>\n<p>We supply protocol gateways from Moxa, HMS Networks (Ixxat), Weintek and Duagon, among others. PROFINET is based on Ethernet, offers more bandwidth and better diagnostics, and is what new plants are built with today. Both are managed by the same industry organisation, PI.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Are Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU the same thing?<\/summary>\n<p>They share the same data model and function codes but use different transport. RTU runs serially over RS-485 or RS-232, TCP over Ethernet. A simple Modbus gateway translates between them.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Can PROFINET and EtherNet\/IP share the same network?<\/summary>\n<p>Yes, they can share cables and switches. But the devices do not exchange data directly.
